Rocking Squares by Frederik Roijé
Frederik Roijé presented his new work “Squares” in Milan Salone del Mobile 2009 leaving visitors with good impressions. Industrial and interior designer Roijé believes that “products have a habit of disappearing because of their functionality. I want to prevent this by giving products an additional value. This value is the story behind the product.”
According to Roijé the limited “Square” edition, is a re-invention of traditional furniture, a reinvention of our being, our presence; a period of reflection. Square is a series of confusing objects that are waiting to be reflected. The series consists of chairs, seaters and an actual size rocking horse. The series is made of wood using the latest CNC techniques and it is finished off with durable coating.

The entire limited edition Square series was constructed in Holland in 2009, all pieces are available in two RAL colors 9005 (black) and 9016 (white). The entire collection was designed with one concept in mind to design using squares as the re-invention of traditional furniture. Looking closely at each design object, the Square Chair Right Seater is available in 200 limited pieces and its dimensions are L50cm x W54cm x H93. The Square Chair Left Seater is available in 200 limited pieces and its dimensions are L54cm x W58cm x H80. The Waiting Square Seater is available in 100 limited pieces and its dimensions are L120cm x W100cm x H200. While the Rocking Square which very much reminds us of our childhood wooden toy rocking horse is available in three dimensions small, medium, large at a total of 180 limited pieces with various dimensions.

The Square series brings us memories of famous Dutch architect/designer Gerrit Thomas Rietveld’s Berlin Chair (1923), Red and Blue Chair (1923), and the Zig Zag Chair (1934). Although it is very different in design it is very similar in the usage of asymmetry and the construction of the chair with flat wooden panels. Roijé has managed to create an open spatial structure from equally valued elements which express the cubist contemporary design style. Although it has an impressive design we don’t know how comfortable this chair may be while sitting on it, but after all that is what everyone thought of Rietveld’s chairs as well and they have proved to be very comfortable sitting chairs. The Square series limited edition is clearly geometric purity-obsessed, so is it hip to be SQUARE?
