If you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover then you shouldn’t judge a coffee table by its books, neither a book by the coffee table it lies on. Fortunately enough, in the forthcoming Book a table exhibition no one seems to be afraid of the comparisons. Book a table, which coincides with London Design Festival, is an exhibition of coffee tables and minimalist artists’ books. The featuring creations are made exclusively for Rocket gallery by contemporary designers, architects and artists like Tomoko Azumi, Stefan Eberstadt, Asif Khan, Oliver King, Tom Lovegrove, Jean Claude Mattrat, David Restorick, Richard Roth, Spine, Nina Tolstrup, Corinna Warm and Lars Wolter. All of those exclusive creations will be displayed in a kind of an artistic battle with minimalism related books by a diverse group of artists, designers, photographers and writers including John Baldessari, Tom Benson, Brian Blow, Thomas Clark, Ib Geertsen, Stephen Gill, Michael Gitlin, Sol Lewitt, Jean-Claude Mattrat, Jasper Morrison, Bruno Munari, Olaf Nicolai, Julian Opie, Dieter Roth, Marc Volk, Marjorie Welish and many more. Yatzer invites you to take a closer look.
Richard Roth created exclusively for the exhibition the Sioux City Table that is made of four laser cut identical triangular parts that bolt together and can be obtained in two possible color configurations. The table name comes from the song ‘Sioux City Sue' - from a line saying “for you I'll give up my dog and my horse”. In a kind of life imitates art, Richard’s wife, Susan, was offered a promotion abroad and he agreed to give up his dog and horse to follow her!
On the other hand, Tom Lovegrove created the Fold Coffee table, and says about it: ‘I have been calling it table fold. It wasn't really a name at first; it was more something to name the folder on my computer. However, I think I'll keep it as it works and sounds right. Material wise it's made from a folded sheet of 3mm steel on steel tube legs. It has a powder coat finish and grey nylon feet.
Tomoko Azumi offered an impressive set of three stacking coffee tables that could form part of a gigantic bee house! They are manufactured by Benchmark
David Restorick presented his Cut corner coffee table, in vivid yellow and in a dance mood, made of gloss formica, birch plywood and American black walnut legs.
