Tempynska's design ethos finds expression in the deliberate preservation of the early 20th-century building's architectural heritage. Arched doorways, weathered brick walls, and wooden ceiling beams have been left unrefined, celebrating their imperfections as part of the building's narrative. "We aimed for a raw, honest aesthetic," the architect explains, "so the bricks remain untouched, carrying the weight of history while resonating with the present."
The men's showroom, Storage, introduces a skatepark-inspired edge, utilizing poured concrete elements, which along with exposed brick walls, metallic trade plates, and minimalist stainless-steel shelving and rails, comprise an unyielding yet understated backdrop that amplifies the sleek, modern streetwear collections on display.
In contrast, Domaine 17 embraces softer lines and pink accents, in a space that mixes the raw and dynamic with a sense of femininity interspersed with movement and fluidity via an interplay of corrugated steel walls and wavy mirror frames by Ukrainian brand Oito. A chaotic pile of vintage TVs further emphasizes the space's playful yet subversive character with hidden cameras projecting visitors' movements onto the screens in glitch-filled effects.
The conceptual third section enhances the showroom's narrative of juxtaposition and surrealism with mirrored walls creating an infinite maze of reflections. Magenta neon lighting in the fitting rooms bathes the space in a dreamlike glow, blurring the line between reality and illusion, while vault-like doors convey a sense of exclusivity as if guarded treasures are waiting to be discovered. An asymmetrical pink Bug table, again by Oito, appears to float, inviting contemplation on form and function.
Dominated by concrete, stainless steel, aged brick, and corrugated metal, the material palette weaves all three rooms into a cohesive industrial narrative. Accentuated throughout by patches of moss and ferns—plants that thrive with quiet defiance in low light—Tempynska’s austere yet evocative interiors embody “the raw essence of an urban landscape that thrives with minimal human interference", as she explains.
A testament to Kyiv's enduring cultural and creative resilience in the face of ongoing conflict, the Storage X Domaine 17 showrooms reaffirm the city’s identity as a vibrant hub of innovation and artistry where history and modernity converge in profoundly moving and inspiring ways.
