Blending the old with the new is not always an easy task, but Singaporean designer Lim Siew Hui seems to have mastered the art of it. After the all-American OverEasy Orchard diner (which we’vepresented recently), here comes another casual yet chic all-day dining concept in Singapore: part of the iconic and historical Asian Civilisations Museum complex, the new Privé ACM restaurant and cafe is a balancing act of history and tradition set against the stunning views of the modern everyday reality.

Set by the Singapore River, Privé ACM’s colourful and homey interior creates a beautiful contrast with the views of the Central Business District’s skyline across the river. Hui’s intention was to evoke a sense of nostalgia by using old traditional elements in a modern way, in order to create a venue that has a link to the Museum and the historical building that houses it; seen for example in the materials used, like the custom-designed cement floor tiles featuring a lattice-shaped pattern and the carpentry reminiscent of the traditional ‘asian Larder’ and utilitarian ‘kampong’-style furniture. Hui’s favourite pastels and love for bronze mixed together with Privé’s signature turquoise tint complete the picture, while the use of cane furniture —inspired by the designer’s childhood memories of old Shop houses— adds a tropical touch to the mix.

The overall warm, cosy and laid back ambience is complemented by Privé ACM’s signature comfort food, which has become the brand’s cornerstone: cakes, salads, burgers and pastries are among the most popular on the menu, while patrons can even pick up a readymade picnic basket to enjoy their snacks outdoors.
