Vila Madalena, or Vila, is known for its vibrant street art culture. In homage to this, the school boasts the first horizontal graffiti in San Paulo, an original idea by FORM bureau realized in collaboration with painter, Cristiano Kana. Painted on the ceiling of the terrace, it features large, black circles, extending over the back garden and far over the entrance, thereby immediately brining the dynamic surrounding community into the school. Meanwhile, the graphic identity of the school was realized by Kiko Farkas Studio; this includes the interior's color scheme as well as the innovative use of huge numbers displaying the building's different stories as an artful "navigation system."
Abstract patterns abound and include those of the furniture designed by FORM with the Brazilian company MAC. Spy windows and carefully placed, glass partitions give glimpses of the students’ art, the open workspaces and classroom. Meanwhile, the bold color scheme chosen throughout references the strong Brazilian culture while also emphasizing Isay Weinfeld's architectural prowess. All elements combine in the creation of a space that inspires students to learn and create their own art.
Escola Britânica de Artes Criativas is not a typical school, not in its architectural design, neither in its curriculum. It’s a haven, a delight for the artistic souls who when walking under the graffiti mural above them and through the transparent glass doors into the canvas that is the school, feel as if they have entered not just a place of learning, but a community that both “fits” and understands them.
