Owned by Eagle Point Hotel Partners and newly renovated by Brooklyn-based firm Studio Tack (of the "upscale western" Anvil Hotel in Wyoming fame), Sound View hotel, located in Greenport, Long Island, merges the 50s with the modern day, resulting in a quintessential Long Island Sound experience.

Guests are welcomed with the name of the hotel, “Sound View,” simply written in white letters on a burgundy awning above the double, wood and glass entrance doors. In the lobby, understated elegance awaits. White wood paneled walls continue all the way to the beamed ceiling above, and a huge, old-fashioned reception desk—in the same wood as on the entrance door - are a good prelude into the soft tones and sparse, but more than adequate, furnishings that await in the guest rooms.

Each guest room features a covetable deck looking out over the blue sea, a mini bar nook in which continues the rooms' pinewood paneling and wall sconce pendent lights that are simple, almost minimalistic. Chairs reminiscent of metal Route 66 motel chairs; small bathrooms with floor to ceiling, white subway tiles; and stairs leading invitingly down from the deck to the sandy and rocky beach below complete the updated ambiance.

But there’s more. Take the beach bar, which boasts a swimming pool of classic blue tiles and white finishing for guests yearning for the sun. For those who perhaps prefer a cozier experience, the enveloping library with its comfy chairs and mahogany bookshelves awaits. Meanwhile, the bright, lobby lounge with its wicker sofas nods to Greenport’s whaling past… as the sofas actually resemble whaling boats.

Come dinner time, guests can choose between the piano bar and lounge, the Halyard indoor dining room or the outdoor planked deck with its carved posts of old sailors that continue the seaside theme. The menu, under the direction of award-winning chef, Galen Zamarra, embodies “the property’s nautical geography and history with fresh produce, seafood and wine from the North Fork and Atlantic Seaboard.”

An all-encompassing experience rather than just a destination, Sound View manages to bring history and location together nostalgically in an All-American, beachside setting …. and all within walking distance to the quaint, former fishing village of Greenport.
