Housed in an old sponge factory that was once home to a merchant who made the first sponge diving equipment, LOS’ setting is one of beauty and intrigue, evident from the moment one dives in to be welcomed into an atmosphere as tranquil as the ocean. Although its exterior is awash with a traditional palette typical to the island, the addition of modern signage indicates that there are many wonders to discover in a design that references this magical island’s history and culture whilst adding something fresh and complimentary to the mix.
Inside, the bar area captures the eye immediately with multiple copper and single bulb lights that hang in a free-form shape that mimics the sponge and, at the same time, creates a kind of man-made replica of the island’s calm and clear starry nights. The many bottles arranged on shelves add a stylishly chaotic element in contrast to the pared back interior and white washed walls that allow the many features to pop. Comprised of a poured concrete structure that also mimics the shape of sponge and juxtaposes nature and the manmade in an exciting and referential concept, the bar itself is indeed a sight to behold.
The incredible graphic tiled floor is so bold and striking it would have been a crime not to take those amazing colours and use them further as the palette for the design, a crime avoided seen in the mosaic of the diving mask finishes off the dining area; a piece de resistance in a space that includes an abundance of sophisticated character. Brass ductwork throughout ties together the overall character of the design which mixes contemporary and tradition elements to create something as special as the location that LOS occupies.
A place as magical and as full of treasures as the ocean that surrounds the island it is located on, LOS has a past that’s enchanting and a future which his ensured to make every visitor feel like they’ve discovered something with many depths to explore whilst at the same time feeling totally relaxed in a special atmosphere.
