His thematic preoccupation with nature comes as no surprise asTserionis’ previous work, although strikingly different, has always incorporated a strong sentimentality, which was camouflaged by irony and the use of unconventionally mixed media materials.George Tserionis, presents some twenty-three new collagesput together both by black and white and colored archived images, all carrying metaphors and the inner beauty of their subjects. Human and animal figures are folded and manipulated as if they have been forced in an almost brutal makeover. The deformed figures and faces of his subjects give a sense of agony, as the subjects are portrayed to ‘feel’ forcefully squeezed and trapped.
In all his photographic collages nature appears and reappears in different forms; in a freshly picked vegetable or in the scared look of a deer. His technique of folding the images and thus altering their initial meaning giving them new dimensions is considered and unpredictably delightful. His use of historic places and figures as well as natural and urban landscapes carry a nostalgic approach to the past but also a critical overview of its effects on the present and even in the future.
George Tserionis’s new work is gentle and nostalgic. It strongly relates to the natural environment and the effect of fast-paced, fast-lived growth and development. It may not offer something extraordinarily new but it makes you stop, think, reflect and ticks all the boxes of an accomplished neo romantic work.
