So many of us love design because of its magical ability to transform the “everyday” into something spectacular. There are objects all around that we use in our daily lives, objects which have a function of which we never give a second thought aside from the one moment in which we utilize them; like the “snooze” button on your alarm clock that you hit each morning, the spatula with which you cook your eggs for breakfast, or the ever present desk calendar… Well, someone has come along and made something extraordinary out of one of these very “ordinary” things.
Dan Usiskin decided to infuse one of his favorite childhood activities, “connect the dots” (or dot to dot), into the reworking of the classic calendar. The Dot to Date calendar allows its owner to interact in an entirely new way with their days; they can use pens, pencils, markers, whatever they like, to connect the dots of each day in a month. At the end of the month, and upon completion of connecting the dots, a London landmark is revealed. On the back of each completed card there is an explanation of the corresponding building or landmark that has been created out of the dots.
The calendar is purchased as a pack of twelve blank cards with the exception of the numbered dots. Even the Dot to Date packaging can be transformed into a picture frame to display your completed works of art. The calendar was designed so that all completed cards can be removed easily to frame, display, or give away to your loved ones –and what a perfect gift for the holidays as we ring in a brand new year.
Usiskin, wanted to create something simultaneously playful and functional, educational and “engaging”; “It's a fun calendar that plays with the rituals and patterns we have in our adult life by contrasting them with the childhood activity of dot-to-dot. The format provides a framework to be used and customised, coloured and scribbled on. As time goes on it becomes a more emotive, personal and unique object, taking on the personality of the user, becoming more valuable in the process.”
As a cherry on top of this delightful creation, the Dot to Date calendars are a shining example of sustainability as Usiskin has printed the collection with water and vegetable based inks on 100% recycled materials, making the calendars themselves 100% recyclable. Now, if only Usiskin would design a Dot to Date for every major city so we can all join in on the fun!
The "Dot to Date" calendar, was designed and produced under the Hidden Art Select brand.
