''All that is gold does not glitter'' wrote John Ronald Reuel Tolkien in his poem which became an integral part, appearing twice, in his famous fantasy novel ‘The Lord of the Rings’. Now if only one of the 100 creative practices featured in this precious-looking book by Hong Kong’s Viction:ary designed the jackets for his much-praised trilogy, he might just have thought otherwise.

Reminiscent of an archetypal ingot of gold, Gold & Silver, New Metallic Graphics is the latest publication by Viction:ary, the creative agency and publishing house which surveys the use of precious colours, materials and techniques among contemporary graphic design practices around the globe. This highly-polished volume, the third book from the colour-themed Palette series (following the Black & White and Multicolour titles) showcases some of the best, most innovative or simply beautiful designs in its 256 soft-bound, neatly laid-out pages. Featuring a vast array of eye-catching, light-reflecting projects, which include business card designs, book jackets, show invitations, biscuit and chocolate packaging, industrial products or even furniture pieces by practices such as SEA, Coralie Bickford-Smith, Rice Creative, Tomas Kral, Lomography, Studio Job, WORK, Mother New York and Ritator, to name just a few, Gold & Silver offers a comprehensive view of this glistening trend and proves that clean-cut, modern and minimalist designs do not need to be restricted to an exclusively sombre, monochrome palette.
So let’s take a look at this fascinating publication which proves that even in these times of economic uncertainty, when applied sensibly and with great understanding, expensive techniques such as metallic coating or even pure gold plating don’t need to be reserved solely for royal mints and fine jewellers.
