Architecture practice SCEG designed this family house on the island of Nosy Be, Madagascar’s busiest tourist destination, drawing inspiration from its breathtaking tropical surroundings. Named after a nautical term that means ‘travelling with open sails’, the house has a large slanted straw roof with triangular openings, which indeed are reminiscent of the sails of a yacht.

A hybrid between a house and a pavilion, the residence is both practical and private, whilst being generously open to the natural environment around it, connecting the forest behind it with the beach in front. Four built volumes stand within the corners of the house, containing bedrooms and other private areas, with the cross-shaped open area that is carved out by these volumes in the middle of the house used as a semi-outdoor living space. Impressive wooden constructions and an overall balance between structural virtuosity and calm simplicity top off this amazing project.
