The design focuses on integrating the house with its natural surroundings. The original stone structure has been retained, embodying the timeless beauty of local architecture, while a metal framework, introduced to support the upper level, gives the home a modern edge while maintaining structural integrity.
On the ground floor, the open-plan layout emphasizes fluidity and openness. The back houses the staircase and secondary functions, clearing the way for unobstructed sea views from the living area, which acts as the heart of the home. The kitchen, cleverly designed with folding doors, transforms into a sleek wooden box when not in use, maintaining the scheme’s minimalist aesthetic.
Upstairs, the two bedrooms offer privacy without compromising any connection to the home's open design. A glass partition incorporated in the metal framework subtly separates the spaces from the living area below, allowing light to flow through and offering visual continuity.
Painted black and fitted with Crittall-style internal windows—a practical way to ensure natural ventilation for the bedrooms in conjunction with skylights—the framework lends subtle industrial vibes. Concrete flooring, contemporary furniture, and a monochromatic palette of white and grey further enhance the space’s loft-like sensation, while the use of natural wood and stone anchor the design in the island’s earthy palette.
The juxtaposition of materials—stone, metal, and wood—balances the characteristic rusticity of the island’s architecture with contemporary design, creating a serene yet functional space in what is ultimately a harmonious dialogue between the past and present.
