Dutch couple Fleur Huijskens and Nicole Boekhoorn spent three years traveling the world in search of the perfect place to open a healing retreat before finally putting down roots in the Cape Winelands, South Africa’s premier wine-producing region. With its rolling vineyards, dramatic mountains, and historic towns, the location feels like a natural choice, in a landscape that exudes both serenity and a deep connection to the land. Guided by the couple’s visionary ethos of slow living, Sterrekopje fully embraces the region’s natural beauty as well as its ancestral wisdom, offering guests a chance to realign with a more organic rhythm of life.
Sprawled across 50 hectares near the town of Franschhoek, the retreat is anchored by a soulfully restored 17th-century homestead, reimagined in collaboration with interior designer Gregory Mellor, housing just 11 meticulously curated suites—each a sanctuary of art, craft, and understated luxury. With a holistic tapestry of wellness rituals, healing sessions, and biodiverse gardens supplying much of the retreat’s seasonal, nutrient-rich cuisine, Sterrekopje is not just a getaway but a homecoming—to oneself, to the land, and to the simple joys of being present.

Sterrekopje’s story is one of serendipity as well as vision. Boekhoorn describes their encounter with the historic farm as “an innate knowing”; “it was not something specific that I saw; it was a deep feeling,” she recalls. The name itself, Sterrekopje—meaning “the bright star above the little mountain”—felt like a celestial nod to their purpose. Over the past three years, the couple has carefully restored the land, reviving its fertility through regenerative farming practices and biodiversity-focused cultivation. Today, over 100 varieties of indigenous and heritage plants thrive here, forming a symbiotic ecosystem where soil health and human well-being are cherished in equal measure.

The retreat’s design is a celebration of texture, warmth, and the poetic tension between old and new. Interior designer Gregory Mellor has infused the historic Cape Dutch buildings with a sense of lived-in elegance, blending natural materials with worldly treasures. Each space tells a story, from the dining room with its oak table and botanical frescoes, to the infusions room where medicinal herbs dry against walls layered with pages from antique botanical books.
The heart of the house, however, is the kitchen—a welcoming expanse where guests gather around a sunlit central table, watch the bakers at work, or linger in the adjacent orangery, sipping freshly brewed herbal teas. Handcrafted ceramics from the farm’s own workshop, embroidered silks, and suzanis add to the layered, sensory richness of the interiors, while the rhythmic arrangement of terracotta tiles and herringbone-patterned bricks evoke a sense of permanence and place.

Designed as sanctuaries of rest and inspiration, each of the 11 suites carries its own distinct personality where every detail, from woven textiles to vintage lighting fixtures, has been chosen to create a feeling of home. Some are nestled within the historic Main House, offering a sense of intimacy with their cozy nooks and private terraces overlooking the gardens. Others are scattered across the farm, providing more expansive living spaces where deep bathtubs, open fireplaces, and handcrafted furnishings foster moments of quiet indulgence. The most elaborate suites feature spa-like bathrooms, sun-dappled terraces, and carefully curated antiques that feel both storied and effortlessly elegant.

Beyond the walls of the farmhouse, wellness takes many forms, all of them deeply rooted in nature such as the Bath House, the Soul Shed, and the Yurt offering immersive rituals, energy-balancing therapies, yoga and breathwork sessions. Countless idyllic spots designed for reading, resting, and recharging can be found scattered around the estate’s verdant grounds, including numerous gardens, a boating lake, and a shimmering swimming pool ideal for cooling off under the African sun.
At its core, Sterrekopje is of course a retreat but not in the sense of escaping, but in the truest sense of returning—to nature, to community, to the self. “Just being among all of this, it does something to you,” Boekhoorn muses. “It grounds you; it allows you to surrender, it allows you to just be.” And in a world that so often demands the opposite, this might just be the greatest luxury of all.
