Athens is notorious for undermining the street food scene by stubbornly refusing to grant permits to food trucks. 48 Urban Garden however managed to solve this little problem by simply replacing the kitchen with an infinitely instagrammable Airstream travel trailer! That’s right, each and every one of the quirky street food options on the menu is cooked inside this refashioned aluminum coach, while the atrium pays host to a full-on herb garden that directly supplies the bar with cocktail ingredients.
Operating on the ground floor of the well-known Ileana Tounta Contemporary Art Center, 48 Urban Garden has infused the premises with some unexpected New York attitude, giving the kiss of life to an otherwise quiet neighborhood. The cocktail list includes storied artisanal long drinks with a twist, such as the Zombie 48 (rum blend with caramel, lime juice, bitters and a mysterious porn mix!), the Cucumber Fizz (gin with homemade ginger syrup, elderflower, lime and delicious fresh herbs), as well as a selection of berry-flavoured, whisky cocktails. The food selection is a gourmet take on old street food favorites, like fish ‘n chips and fried chicken, and is best consumed with friends on the long picnic tables that will inevitably make you feel like a kid again. Until the drinks arrive and you realize you no longer need your parents’ permission to order seconds!
