The KAGE Trolley Suitcase by TSATSAS For Wallpaper* Handmade 2013

Words by Yatzer

Since its inception in 2010, Wallpaper* Magazine’s Handmade series has brought together an impressive roster of some of the world’s best designers. Each year they lend their creative talent to produce unique pieces spanning from furniture and fittings fashion and food projects. This year, the magazine’s carefully-curated collection was showcased at its new home, the Milanese contemporary gallery Leclettico founded by Claudio Loria. Amongst the many eclectic, well-crafted objects, visitors got a chance to catch their first glimpse of the well-proportioned, minimalist KAGE

Designed by Esther Schulze-Tsatsas and Dimitrios Tsatsas, the husband-and-wife duo behind the Frankfurt-based high-end bag label TSATSAS, whose clean, contemporary forms and fine execution caught our attention earlier this year {A Look Into The Handcrafted World Of TSATSAS Bags}, the suitcase itself was inspired by late 19th century luxurious travel accessories. Owing its name to the Japanese word for ‘shadow’, this strikingly refined leather suitcase’s outer shell is made of matte, delicately textured Italian cowhide while its interior is lined with butter-soft nappa leather. The design is supported by a contrasting, tubular, high-gloss brass frame, which recalls modernist aesthetics popularized in the 1930s by the acclaimed design trio Le Corbusier, Charlotte Perriand and Pierre Jeanneret.

Meticulously handcrafted in its entirety in Germany, the functional trolley suitcase is without a doubt a beautiful object in its own right. Featuring a discreetly embossed, crest-like golden logo bearing the Wallpaper* Handmade symbol and a serial number, like all TSATSAS bags, it encapsulates Esther and Dimitros’ mix of creativity and quintessential German precision and quality control. Bon Voyage! Or rather, Gute Reise!
