Nestled in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland, and centred around an 15th century church, Adelboden is your typical sleepy Swiss village enveloped in a scenic Alpine setting of rolling meadows, forested valleys, and majestic mountains. Occupying a century-old building, The Brecon hotel, which opened its doors last summer, shares Adelboden’s bucolic charm and picturesque familiarity thanks to its classic Swiss chalet architecture. Step inside though and it’s a whole different story—reimagined by Amsterdam-based interior design studio Nicemakers, the hotel’s mid-century-inspired interiors are the epitome of contemporary sophistication and understated glamour.

Taking over what was once the Hotel Huldi, The Brecon carries within its walls the storied past of a building first erected in 1914. During its heyday in the 1950s and ‘60s, when it was known as the Waldhaus, it was a hub for socialites and Alpine glamour. Nicemakers has masterfully woven this heritage into the fabric of its redesign, evoking a golden era of European hospitality while ensuring that the experience is unmistakably modern. The result is an exquisite balance of nostalgia and modernity in a hotel that feels at once deeply familiar and refreshingly new.
At the heart of the design lies an evocative homage to mid-century aesthetics expressed through a carefully curated interplay of textures, materials, and sculptural forms. Cozy yet expansive, the hotel’s communal areas echo the warmth of a private home. A smooth, curvaceous backdrop of flawless wood, white-plastered walls, and local stone flooring strike an exquisite sense of balance between past and present as does the mix of vintage and contemporary furniture. Iconic pieces from the 1960s and 1970s make their mark while bespoke sofas from VITRA lend a contemporary sensibility, their clean lines softened by the warmth of natural textiles. Hand-knotted rugs by Layered in colourful patterns, and oversized, handmade pendant lights from Memori Gallery in Marseille add even more layers of texture.

The same refined aesthetic continues throughout the hotel’s 18 rooms and four suites, where a palette of earthy hues and natural materials fosters an atmosphere of serene luxury. Timber, leather, and natural fabrics such as wool, linen, and cotton work in harmony, enhancing the breathtaking mountain views that flood through expansive windows. Contemporary artworks sourced from Amsterdam’s Bisou Gallery, thoughtfully collected objects from across Europe, along with a selection of books and magazines lend each space a lived-in, cultivated elegance.

Beyond its striking interiors, The Brecon offers an experience of indulgent discretion. A true hideaway, it is an all-inclusive, adults-only retreat designed for those who seek both escape and connection. The hotel’s dining philosophy is rooted in a simple yet refined approach: an open kitchen serves a daily changing menu crafted from fresh, seasonal ingredients, celebrating the region’s culinary traditions with dishes such as Wild Mushroom Risotto and Roast Alpine Salmon with Crushed Potatoes and Fish Velouté. Guests can also sip on expertly mixed cocktails in the adjacent lounge., sample a superlative wine list, or opt for organic teas and coffee from Wales-based roaster as, after all, Grant Maunder, The Brecon’s founder, is a Wales native.

This sense of indulgence extends seamlessly to The Brecon’s spa, an intimate sanctuary where design and well-being converge. Clad in pastel rose tones, walnut wood, and forest-green glazed ceramics, the space radiates warmth and elegance. An outdoor heated pool, with its graceful Art Deco curves, invites guests to soak in the crisp mountain air while taking in panoramic views of the Adelboden Massif. Inside, a sauna and steam room with glass walls provide a restorative escape, complemented by the flickering fire in the relaxation lounge offering the perfect setting to sink into an afternoon of quiet contemplation.

A year-round destination—offering skiing in the winter and hiking in the summer—The Brecon understands that the art of hospitality is as much about what you leave out as what you put in. Eschewing ostentation and unnecessary frills in favour of thoughtful simplicity, this intimate Alpine retreat allows the landscape to take centre stage while immersing guests in an environment of unparalleled refinement.
