Aurelien Juner, a young artist and designer from Bordeaux now based in Barcelona, seamlessly blends diverse artistic disciplines in his exploration of order and disorder, as well as the interplay between image and graphics. His series Surface offers a compelling reflection on the influence of fashion magazines on the dissemination of imagery and how these images interact with and shape our perception of reality.
Surface examines the fictional and idealized world curated by magazines and juxtaposes it against the real world where these images are constructed. Juner’s creative process begins with a magazine cover placed against a stark white background, serving as a blank canvas for his interventions. Drawing inspiration from the original cover, he transforms it into a completely new piece that challenges its original intent and meaning.

Sometimes the covers are placed in everyday settings—nestled between a donut and a coffee mug—or undergo radical reworkings: they are repainted, burned, cut, and reconstructed using various techniques. Once Juner finalizes his composition, he captures a new photograph of the altered cover. As he aptly explains, this new image represents a return to the “mass culture” from which the original cover emerged, now imbued with new context and meaning.
Juner’s work invites a dialogue between the image and the viewer, positioning them in the space between the original cover and the reimagined artwork. His creations challenge the origins of an image, its role in mass media culture, and its influence on our understanding of reality.

Beyond their conceptual depth, Juner’s works stand out for their artistic brilliance. His distorted covers are not only original pieces of art but also add a fresh dimension to the familiar realm of magazine imagery. His exceptional composition skills and vivid imagination elevate Surface into the realm of still-life photography, aligning him with a tradition of artists who create photos rather than merely take them.
Aurelien Juner’s provocative and imaginative take on mass culture invites us to rethink the narratives we consume every day. His series, blending creativity and critique, promises to captivate and inspire viewers. Explore his exotic and thought-provoking imagery, and discover an artist redefining the boundaries of still-life photography.
