It is not always easy to fulfill a dream, and this is something that Florian Dussopt and Julie Girard, the heads behind Anna Gram’ Design Studio, know perfectly well. In 2008 they had the amazing idea of launching a jewellery line made of petroleum, inspired by its rich texture and dark color. They originally conceived the idea for the French International Design Biennale 2008, but the so called ‘Petroleum Jewellery’ was deemed too complex for series production. It was not until they met London based Metalwork and Jewellery designer Niza Huang that they finally saw their dream come true. Petroleum Jewellery is like nothing you have ever seen before, with liquid petroleum incorporated inside intricate compositions of either 18ct gold plated sterling silver or sterling silver and mineral glass. As we all know, petroleum is in fact, considered as 'black gold', and the designers view it both as a precious substance that literally fuels whilst possessing the potential to destroy. In highlighting its beauty therefore, they are also highlighting its importance as well.
Petroleum Jewellery raises awareness about this controversial substance that is widely abused by consumers all over the world. The designers say that it is essential to learn how to preserve it in order to take care of our planet for future generations. Each piece of Petroleum Jewellery is handmade, containing a droplet of petroleum magnified by mineral glass, encased inside a delicate silver or gold cocoon. The concept has been re-interpreted by Anna Gram’ Design Studio in various forms, encompassing rings, earrings, pendants and bangles. The final result is truly breathtaking since the pieces look more like wearable sculptures from an outer planet, crossing the thin line between art and design. Yatzer, so fond of finding beauty even behind the most ordinary of things, could not but fall in love with the pieces. Next time you use your car instead of walking or taking the metro, just think how precious petroleum would look against your neck or your fingers instead of wasting it aimlessly!
