There are espresso addicts all over the world just like there are design lovers. After all, espresso coffee can wake up your senses and make up your day just like good design. That’s what Piers Mansfield-Scaddan thought and tried to transform all what we love about espresso coffee and the characteristic Italian espresso pot, with its curves and metallic brightness, to the perfect lamp. And although Piers Mansfield-Scaddan doesn’t come from Italy but from South Africa, he really made it!

The Espresso Lamp series, as Piers Mansfield-Scaddan points out, is inspired by industrial fabrication techniques and craftsmanship and functions as a quirky desk light which works either in a domestic setting or home office. The original intention was to fabricate a visually arresting minimal design that parodies the frilly lamps found in our grandmother’s attic, yet industrially fabricated from sheets of anodised aluminium. Showcasing several industrial processes, the range reflects Piers’ obsession with all things technological: “I use industrial technology but not with a focus on mass production but rather to batch and limited editions. I labour over every detail, and this brings a sense of the handmade back into my work”.

Espresso lamp is available in candy Apple colours from lilac and turquoise to aubergine and more established finishes of gold, bronze and black. As for the size, there are 3 different options: single, double and mini espressos! In the last edition of Design Indaba (25-27 February, Cape Town) Piers Mansfield Scaddan even released a limited edition series of 100 mini Espresso lamps –all individually numbered.  In order to celebrate this release, Piers re-launched his contemporary seating arrangement, Tandem bench, made from sustainably sourced plywood and latex foams. Tandem is an asymmetrical bench seat for contract and hospitality environment and comes in a standard edition of white steel sleigh base (also available in stainless steel in contract fabrics). With its minimal design, it’s definitely the perfect company to the Espresso lamp. Well, what more can we say, it seems that the perfect scenery for your morning coffee is finally set!
