These days, a dining experience is not only meant to serve up culinary delicacies but also entertain and set a stage for social interaction and comfort. Eating out in today's fast paced world now has to entail finding ways in which to both satisfy and couple the innate need of the body with the desires of the mind and heart. The fast-casual eatery, Biribildu (79 Poseidonos Avenue, Alimos area) in Athens, Greece does all these things. Designed by Greek interior architect Minas Kosmidis, the concept behind the eatery is all about revolving and turning reflecting the actual meaning of the word ‘Biribildu’ in Basque (= to turn, to make a round) . All the innate details that we identify with the circus open up through an array of different visual stimuli as they  speak about the nature of enjoying the absurd and temporary before the moment is gone.

Biribildu’s colour palette aptly sets the tone and theme for the concept where iconic red and yellow tents act like a globally recognised cue to circus life. Think big, bold typography that takes you back to the bills that were once pasted on the walls of cities’ streets promoting the next big act that was coming to town. The main space is driven by floating horses which dictate how customers move around and enjoy the circus experience itself where boardwalk motifs and details reflect the festival and entertainment theme as quick, succulent bites of souvlaki ‘to-go’ or eat in can be ordered before diners carry on with their day. Circular drones, coloured wood and a variety of decorative elements almost give a fleeting sense.  This notion of the temporary denotes a feeling that at some point the whole scene will move on, just as circuses do, to another city altogether. All of this makes the diner very present, as if forced to notice all the details around them whilst fulfilling the most basic and elemental of our needs.

Almost like dressing rooms to the circus acts themselves (or the actors of Biribildu), the roof in the restrooms transports diners into an era that’s all ornate plaster ceilings and coffers while the Mediterranean patterns give a hint of the ethnicity of the culinary delicacies themselves. Overall, the assembly of elements, colours, graphics and circus identifiers create a place that is not only meant for dining, but an escape from the reality of the outside world. Biribildu succeeds in reminding us that at times we need spaces to not only fulfill functional purposes, but also to transport us into another dreamy reality that harps back to another era, albeit with a very modern edge.
